Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School 11 Plus Exam Format

The Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School 11 Plus uses the Kent Medway test and consists of three separate papers: Paper 1 is English, Paper 2 is Mathematics and Paper 3 is Reasoning covering Spatial Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning.

Paper 1 – English covers English skills including comprehension, punctuation and grammar.

Paper 2 – Mathematics covers mathematical knowledge and problem solving.

Paper 3 – Reasoning covers Spatial Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning.

Our current Kent Medway information does not publish exact paper timings or a specific response format for the real test, so these should not be invented or inferred from another GL examination.

What Does the Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The Medway Test separates English, Mathematics and Reasoning into three distinct papers, which means children need both strong individual subject skills and the stamina to maintain concentration across separate assessments.

English preparation needs to develop careful reading, comprehension and secure technical English. Vocabulary is also valuable because stronger word knowledge can support both English and Verbal Reasoning.

The Mathematics paper requires children to apply secure KS2 knowledge to a range of calculations and problems rather than relying on one narrow area of Maths.

The Reasoning paper creates a different challenge because it combines Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning. Children therefore need to switch between language-based and visual reasoning while maintaining accuracy.

Spatial Reasoning should be prepared for specifically because it is explicitly included in the current Medway Test structure rather than being assumed to form part of Non-Verbal Reasoning generally.

A sensible progression is literacy and numeracy foundations → English and Maths skills → vocabulary and reasoning techniques → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed work → complete Kent Medway mock exams.

All four mock exams contain different questions, allowing families to space fresh tests throughout preparation and use later mocks to measure improvement.

Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores

We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School 11 Plus pass mark.

A percentage achieved on one of our Kent Medway mocks should primarily be used to measure preparation and progress rather than treated as equivalent to an official entrance-test result.

The three-paper structure also means that an overall result can conceal an important weakness. A child may achieve a reasonable total while repeatedly losing marks in English, Mathematics or particular types of Reasoning.

Our detailed answers can help identify whether marks are being lost because of knowledge gaps, vocabulary, accuracy, reasoning technique, timing or general exam technique.

Spatial Reasoning should be reviewed separately because it forms part of the real Medway Reasoning paper but is not currently included in our Kent Medway mock Reasoning paper.

Parents can then target those weaker areas before using another fresh mock to assess whether performance improves.

How to Prepare for the Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School 11 Plus

Effective Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School preparation should develop secure skills across English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning before children rely heavily on complete timed mock exams.

The strongest preparation develops underlying subject knowledge and reasoning methods first, then progressively introduces mixed, timed and exam-style work.

English Preparation

English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Children should become comfortable reading unfamiliar material carefully, identifying relevant information and understanding exactly what each question requires.

Vocabulary is particularly useful because it also supports Verbal Reasoning and can make unfamiliar questions easier to interpret efficiently.

Maths Preparation

Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 knowledge. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become accurate and reliable before significant time pressure is introduced.

Children should then progress towards mixed mathematical problems where they need to decide independently which method is required.

This develops flexible problem solving rather than dependence on questions always being grouped by topic.

Vocabulary and Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning relies on both reasoning technique and vocabulary.

Children should learn systematic approaches to verbal reasoning questions while developing vocabulary consistently over time.

New words should be introduced deliberately and revisited regularly rather than memorised briefly and then forgotten.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal Reasoning requires children to analyse visual information carefully and identify patterns, relationships and changes.

Preparation should encourage a systematic approach rather than relying on instinct or selecting an answer simply because it looks plausible.

Spatial Reasoning Preparation

Spatial Reasoning is explicitly included in the current Medway Reasoning paper.

Children should therefore practise visual problems that require them to understand positions, arrangements, transformations and relationships in space.

This area needs separate preparation because it is part of the real test but is not currently included in our Kent Medway mock Reasoning papers.

Building Exam Technique and Stamina

Once the underlying English, Maths and reasoning skills are secure, timed work should become increasingly important.

Children should progress from accurate untimed exercises to shorter timed sections and eventually complete English, Mathematics and Reasoning papers.

The three-paper structure makes stamina important because children need to maintain concentration across separate subject assessments rather than one short combined test.

Our Kent Medway mocks can then help bring much of this preparation together under realistic test-style conditions, while Spatial Reasoning should continue to be practised separately.
